  • Challenges in AI and mobile health for leveraging access to care in mental health

The World Health Organization estimates that nearly one billion individuals grapple with a Mental Health disorder. Despite the substantial prevalence of mental health conditions, only a limited number of people worldwide have access to quality mental health services.

Among a plethora of digital tools developed, only a few have shown capacity in addressing mental health problems and in compensating some of the known global inequalities in access to mental health support. For instance, internet websites and mobile applications have the potential to provide wider access to mental health prevention and promotion, to online peer-support communities, to online therapies, texting interventions or to teleconsultation.

AI, including deep learning and large language models (LLMs), also offer promising pathways for increasing access to care in mental health. 2023 has seen a rapid acceleration of LLMs in their aptitude to answer complex questions, including medical questions. These capabilities attract speculations on the potential of LLMs to provide safe and evidence-based answers to the needs of the public and patients. These technologies also question their influence and place in the therapeutic alliance with healthcare professionals, and the involvement of patients in their design. At their present stage of development, important limitations remain which include safety, efficiency, access and data protection and because some of these technologies have also demonstrated their propensity to instigate harm and display biases related to gender, skin color, sexuality or age.

During this 2-day workshop, participants and experts will present their work and discuss the opportunities and challenges that digital innovations are facing to leverage access to care in mental health. A second objective of this workshop will be to conduct a collaborative ideathon project in groups to conceptualize one project idea for which they think that mobile health and/or AI may bring a significant value for ameliorating well-being and access to care in mental health.

Participants will be encouraged to anticipate the implications of the project in terms of cultural context, access, adhesion, ethics, data analytics and financing. This exercise will benefit from interactions with the speakers and the course instructors present during the workshop

  • Literature search for systematic reviews

Evidence-based decision-making requires a systematic review and appraisal of the currently available literature. As such, systematic reviews as critical stand-alone research projects inform decisions from various fields, especially in the clinical and public health sectors. Furthermore, as part of grant applications, health sciences publications in high-impact journals, and ethical approvals they do not just improve the chances of acceptance but are often a pre-requisite. This course offers a hands-on introduction to literature search methods for systematic reviews of randomized controlled trials.

The course starts with pre-course videos that participants can go through in their own time. Students can reflect on their learning process with the help of quizzes. Remaining questions can be posted to lecturers who will answer upfront or within the main course sessions. The main course will be a mix of presentations, group works, hands-on practical work on the participants’ own computer using different software (Microsoft Word and EndNote).

  • Life Course Epidemiology and Public Health

    Description:

Population health is shaped by a complex set of determinants occurring throughout the life course. Life Course Epidemiology (LCE) aims to causally link exposures across the life course to long-term health outcomes via longitudinal studies. LCE investigates the dynamic of exposures at different periods of life (from conception to old ages), at various levels (social, environmental, behavioural, and biological) and historical periods (birth cohorts), and how these exposures influence population health. For this course, we focus on LCE in public health whereby unravelling the complex origins of disease and health aims at informing preventive strategies. Life course epidemiology informs public health interventions via i) identification of windows of opportunity (life periods), ii) identification of target exposures and iii) assessment of potential intervention strategies. Stemming from the same framework, we introduce life course theories and contemporary methods of causal inference from observational data, allowing to explicit confounding assumptions underlying LCE research questions and to evaluate potential public health interventions. More specifically, we will address the following topics:

    • Why life course studies are essential in Public Health, with an emphasis on early life determinants and primordial intervention of chronic diseases.
    • Core epidemiologic study designs of life course studies (birth and prospective cohort studies).
    • Main life course models (critical/sensitive period and accumulation) through
    • which exposures may affect later health outcomes.
    • Causal thinking and statistical methods to assess LCE models from observational data

  • Diagnostic Studies

This course will focus on the design, analyses and interpretation of diagnostic test accuracy (DTA) studies. DTA studies evaluate the performance of a diagnostic test, for example to gauge how good a test is at discriminating between diseased and non-diseased persons.
This course starts with a basic introduction to what a DTA study is and what estimates such as sensitivity and specificity mean. Practicals will be used to calculate estimates of diagnostic accuracy on paper and using STATA. Some calculations to plan study size will be addressed. Thereafter, the course participants are introduced to variations in designs explaining the merits but also pitfalls of specific design choices. Sources of bias and variation will be discussed in detail.

    Objectives:

    • Understand the different objectives and designs of DTA studies
    • Understand the main ways to quantify diagnostic test accuracy and reliability
    • Understand potential risks of bias and concerns regarding applicability of DTA study results
    • Understand design options in case no generally accepted reference standard is available to compare your test of interest to (e.g. latent class analysis)
    • Understand the concepts underlying different approaches to statistical analyses of DTA studies, including sample size calculations
    • Describe estimates and interpret results from DTA studies appropriately

  • Global Health: Advocacy and Diplomacy in Action

    Description:

The fourth year of the COVID-19 pandemic, added to the worsening climate, food, economic and political crises, disrupts our lives in new ways and further exposes and increases societal vulnerabilities. Policymakers must skill up to navigate complex ecosystems characterized by poly-crises, rising inequities and a degrading environment.

As a result, new ways of understanding and working in global health policy, advocacy and diplomacy are needed by those who work in health or those who work in fields that will be affected by decisions or impacts from the health sector.

It is a key year for health governance, given all countries are discussing a possible legally binding pandemic treaty, a new set of commitments for Universal Health Coverage and reviewing progress at the halfway point of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

This course focuses on the practice of global health policy, advocacy, and diplomacy at the global level and its interrelated impact at the regional and national levels. It will:

    • Give a general introduction to policy and decision-making processes
    • Examine the political and policy environment that surrounds the current global health ecosystem
    • Outline decision-making structures in the global health diplomatic space including the World Health Assembly, G20, the UN General Assembly and more
    • Show how to interpret and navigate health governance processes

  • Global Health: Advocacy and Diplomacy in Action

    • Interrogate advocacy work to understand the steps to success and how to draw lessons from failure
    • Employ case studies to illustrate current issues and their related political and policy dynamics
    • Build practical experience with role-playing diplomatic negotiations

  • Introduction into Multilevel Modelling of Clustered Data

    Description:

Real data are often clustered such as repeated measurements on the same
subject or measurements in grouped subjects (e.g. family or school
studies). Failure to allow for clustering results in erroneous standard errors
and confidence intervals. The aim of the course is to provide participants
with an under-standing of the basic concepts and general techniques in the
analysis of clustered data. Valid analysis methods appropriate for clustered
data will be introduced. The course software will be Stata, although R may
also be used. Main concepts to be covered include: clustering, random
intercept, random slope, linear and logistic random-effects models
(multilevel models, mixed models, hierarchical models), robust standard
errors, generalized estimating equations (GEE), modelling strategy, model diagnostics.

  • Introduction to the Statistical Software R

    Description:

This course is a practical introduction to R, a free open-source software environment for statistical computing. Besides an introduction into the software, the following topics will be covered: data import and export, data manipulation, statistical analysis, graphical representation and advanced programming concepts as conditional branching and loops. Students should bring their own laptop for the practical work. In contrast to other statistical software solutions, R is designed around a true computer language. This has the implication that R is characterized by an enormous flexibility that enables the user to perform sophisticated statistical procedures or simulations. R might be less intuitive to scientists without prior programming skills. However, there are some tools available to make the user’s life easier as graphical user interfaces and editors with syntax highlighting. Participants should have basic statistical knowledge. Programming skills are not required. The first 2 days are mainly lectures and practical courses. The 3rd day is a workshop and participants are divided into groups to apply the new knowledge to their own data. Note: the 3rd day is optional. First year PhD students or other participants without own data can alternatively complete a homework assignment to get the credit points.

  • Prognostic Research: Concepts and Models

In the statistical sessions we will guide you through the main steps in prognostic modelling. As well as using Cox and simple parametric survival models, you will be introduced to flexible parametric survival models in Stata as a powerful tool for fitting prognostic data. We will present methods to select prognostic variables and investigate their form with fractional polynomials, compare and choose candidate models using information criteria, and validate the chosen model. We will use splines to model prognostic factors whose effect varies over follow up time and will investigate interactions between predictors. Although statistical theory will be discussed in the lectures, the emphasis will be on practical application of the statistical methods. The practicals will give you experience of selecting prognostic factors and assessing them, choosing between different models, and fitting and validating a prognostic model.

Objectives: By the end of this course participants will have:

    • An understanding of different types of prognostic research
    • An understanding of how prognosis is used in clinical decision making and in discovering new approaches to managing patients
    • Practical experience of analysing and assessing potential prognostic factors
    • Practical experience of developing and validating a prognostic model
    • An understanding of the quality of prognostic research and how it can be improved

  • Introduction to the Global Burden of Disease Project Data and Tools

    Description:

Governments, policy-makers, public health institutions and funders require information on the causes of disease and death in the population to target available resources towards effective, high-impact public health interventions and approaches to improve survival and prevent illness. The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) project developed a framework and methodology for merging and assimilating, validating, analyzing and reporting health-related information on the burden of disease across countries and settings, to inform public health decision- making. GBD now provides the largest, most comprehensive estimates of risk factors, health, morbidity and mortality levels and trends globally. In this course, students will be introduced to the methods and tools used in and developed by the GBD project, to prepare them to understand and interpret the research outputs of the project, and to utilize the datasets and tools available from this project to inform their own research.
The following topics will be addressed:

  • GIS for Public Health

    Description:

The physical and social environment that surrounds us plays an important
part in our health and wellbeing. The geography concept of ‘place’ thus
cannot be ignored in public health. Whether investigating the level of
environmental pollution, access to recreation or health services, or the
patterns or spread of disease, Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
provide the standard platform for exploring spatial attributes and
relationships between our environment and health.
This course offers an introduction to GIS and how it is used in public health
and epidemiological research, with a focus on exposure assessment. It will
introduce students to the basics including: working with and integrating
    spatial and non-spatial data; geographic scale and spatial precision;
projections; geocoding; visualisation; thematic mapping; and
understanding spatial relationships. Specific skills and tools will also be
introduced in relation to methods for route analysis and for spatial linkage
of exposure, contextual and confounder information for epidemiological or
health risk assessment studies. Students will apply their new skills in a case
study based either on their own data or on available datasets for defined
    topics.

This course includes plenty of practical time for hands-on data analysis in industry standard GIS from ESRI, QGIS, R (with an emphasis on ArcGIS Pro), interspersed with a mix of short lectures and demonstrations. No prior knowledge of GIS is required, though completion of pre-course work is essential preparation for this intensive course.

  • Public health surveillance and population health monitoring (advanced module)

    Description:

Public health surveillance is the ongoing and systematic collection,
analysis, and interpretation of health-related data, closely integrated
with their timely dissemination and communication to those responsible
for public health strategies and action on disease prevention and control.
Methods and tools for surveillance and population health monitoring,
initially developed for infectious diseases and outbreak control, are now
applied to other health conditions like chronic diseases, mental health or
    occupational and environmental health.
With the advances in the field of data science and the growing access to
multiple types and increasing volumes of data, the field of surveillance
and health monitoring is going to adapt and evolve rapidly. This includes
moving to a wider scope of applications, for example, surveillance may
also include monitoring of risk factors associated with adverse health
events or monitoring of health care services. This also implies using new
methods for analyzing data, as well as tools for visualizing and
communicating data, depending on target publics.
